Sounds like an earwig

Quite a bit of variety in order dermaptera, they are not aggressive, but some species will give a pinch if provoked. They feed on other insects as well as foliage. Earwigs usually appreciate a moist dark environment. They are rather happy to live with you in your basement or if you supply any crack for them to hide in. Quite common throughout the US and around the world. Might I suggest giving it a name, perhaps Earl?
