normal gaming mice/keyboards are not fast enough to keep up with a gamer's speed. so gaming peripherals are just investments which allow you to have a different experience and the accuracy that you need for gaming. not exactly a need though.

1000hz is a few magnitudes faster than human reaction time. Any gamer worth his salt who cares about polling rate will use PS/2 anyway.
