Why not? Bevel / emboss can make a nice effect on a shape. Though, when over-used it will just ruin it. bevel / emboss is a thing you need to learn how to use. It's not just "Hmm... I think I'll slap some bevel and emboss here and this goatse will look good."

Learn to art first, then you can start learning to filters.
Bevel and emboss is one of the prime reasons that newbies' heads look shitty.
