i've tried to before, and it turns out it's harder than I first thought.

in order to create a rig that reacts realistically (hand pulled towards the body bends the elbow and soforth) parts of the body have to be joined to the related joints, however this creates issues with texturing (I haven't found a way to multitexture one object yet.

Have you tried changing the material type to Multi/Sub-Object in the material/map browser?
