Tried to make a blaster. Turned into some weird blade thing.

it can still be a blaster. the energy gathers in the tips and shoots when charged enough. in other words, IMA FIRIN MAH LAZOR!

Yeah.

I find it easiest to use explosion effect on a small sphere and add glow to it's material. Or you can use volumetric light like vlad does

you can have an omni volumetric light with a very limited falloff, then a volumetric spotlight pointing outwards.
