Photoshop has been nicest to me when it comes to making sigs. How does one reclaim such an expensive program?

Nowai. I use GIMP, and it's pretty easy for me. They're both completely different programs other than the fact that they both do digital art stuff, and GIMP is just slightly more limited. If money and lack of piracy is an issue, use GIMP.

Anyway, try following some tuts. Your first ones will probably come out bad*, but just keep trying and eventually you'll be able to make some cool stuff. By the way, http://www.gimptalk.com/forum is a great place for GIMP tutorials.

most likely a gradient tool. as you can see first time photoshop sigs suck too:

lol, photoshop is what I use. GIMP has some great animation effects, and if you pay a lot, photoshop has even better. Start out by fooling around. Things will get easier and you'll find out a lot by just messing around.
