I'm British so I don't fit in here, but I did learn Swedish and I did become a fluent speaker. (I spent years, and I lived in the country for anyone who dares to argue that I'm some how not).

I can say that along the way my girlfriend at the time and all of the friends I made in Sweden expressed that they were proud; but I've noticed a lot that in other countries people really prefer to try and try their English skills on you.

So I have to say to anyone who knows an English speaker is about and they're trying to speak your native tongue; let them, don't convert to English. It's a learning experience forthem and you often make it more difficult for them to learn in the best way possible (through talking in real life with a real native). :P
