Cloning taken to the next level
Washington: US scientists have used stem cell technology to create mice from two fathers, an advance that they say could help preserve endangered species and even help same-sex couples have their own genetic children one day.

According to the study published Wednesday in the journal Biology of Reproduction, reproductive scientists in Texas were able to manipulate cells from a male (XY) mouse fetus to produce an induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell line.

These iPS cells are adult cells that have undergone some genetic reprogramming in order to enter an embryonic stem cell-like state.

Some of the cells that were grown from this new line spontaneously lost their Y chromosome, turning them into XO cells.

Those XO cells were injected into embryos from donor female mice and transplanted into surrogate mouse moms who gave birth to babies with one X chromosome from the original male mouse.

Those babies grew and later mated with normal male mice.

Their offspring, both male and female, showed genetic contributions from two fathers.

The study was led by Richard R Berhringer at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Researchers said that with a variation of their technique, “it may also be possible to generate sperm from a female donor and produce viable male and female progeny with two mothers.”

However, the study cautioned that the ability to replicate the findings in humans was a long way off.

The “generation of human iPS cells still requires significant refinements prior to their use for therapeutic purposes,” the study said.

Previous research has found ways to create mice without any fathers at all, as well as ways to create mice with two mothers.

This has the potential to save species from extinction. A massive leap in the direction of genetic manipulation and stem cells.
Hoss.
Now all there is to factor in is the moral aspect of stem cell research + cloning.

Somebody is really going to piss themselves when they read this. It's like, the two moral taboos combined. Has there been any sort of retaliation?
Thanks.
Why would there be retaliation? its not like we're cloning real people, but it has potential to where all the endangered species in the world could be cloned, then who cares? why would there be retaliation?
Well, didn't we clone sheep? And weren't the animal activists all fired up about something or other?

I may be wrong.
Thanks.
unfortunately I great thing like this wont be fully exploited because of all the socialistic commies who consider a blob of genetic material a human life (stem cells) and therefore cannot experiment on them.......

I cant see this happening for humans legally any time in the next 50-100 years

but other than that props to them, im also curious on how you get the Y chromosome from two mothers..... *clicks link*
I type as I speak, with several commas and run on sentences, dont be hatin'.

What. The religious right is against stem cell experimentation, not the left.
i have a totally post modern tattoo of a scalene triangle.
<DeadorK> fair maiden
<DeadorK> if the cum is going to be in your mouth
<DeadorK> it shall be in mine as well
ovah, times are moving ridiculously fast. This done on humans could be legally done on humans in the next 20-30 years.
Actually, stuff like this has been possible for a while, but some people think it's morally wrong to do it and they have been holding back this kind of experiments. A shame, this technology can be used to cure a lot of diseases and prevent genetical defects.
Also, why should it be okay to do this with animals, and people start bitching about it when it is done with humans. Humans are animals, but somehow, people feel superior, some even holy. We need to realize what we are, and what we can do to improve life in general. This research can be used to preserve species, but it also gives us insight to save lifes and such. So it should not be held back by christians thinking they know what is good for the world.
Thanks for the Avatar, MrAakash
Well, tech is growing. You all just wait and see how far cloning will go. You'll see shit that now belongs in a Scifi movie.

I agree and kinda don't..
yes preserving species is what cloning should be used for ONLY
i think its morally wrong because there is no mating
yes i am a Christian i think its completely wrong but i would like for my kids to see tigers and polar bears in the future
