Actually, Persons is a word. Plural of Person. I was tought that in English class. I said "People is plural of more than one person". But she told me it's both. And "Persons" is more formal.
Person derives from
persona, which refers to an individual. People, on the other hand, derives from
populum, and it refers to a group of persons sharing a culture or social environment.
So yes, both are a word, but the more widely used is people.
Anyways, another word I sorta hate is Firm. We have a word in the slovak language that is "Firma"=Company. And I always pronounce firm as I would the firm part in firma.
