When I said, "If I am to become a student, will the teachers go over the basics such as using the interface and learning how to create simple shapes and such", I wasn't clear. It was geared towards the basics of blender. I'll read up and apply later.

well for me, all i require for me to teach a student is that they at least know how to select objects, make new ones, and move or rotate them. the VERY VERY basics
