I'd go for 64bit though. You never know how long you'd be keeping your system, and ram will only become cheaper, and applications larger.

Although Vista SP1 32-bit will be able to "spot" the 4 GB (just for identification purposes), it will not be able to use the beyond 3GB.

32-bit Operative Systems are unable to use more than 3GB of RAM. This is true for windows, mac, linux, and so on. Period. It has to do with 32-bit architecture limitations.
