I think kids join/form gangs to get a sense that they are part of something and belong there and that they matter. If they are in a small group of people who are very isolated and close (they are likely to ignore the rest of the world because they will persuade themselves that only their gang matters) they will matter more within that group than they will to society as a whole. They will feel like they can make a difference within that gang and like they support and are supported by something slightly bigger than themselves.

Unfortunately these feelings are far from the reality and it juste ends up as a load of teenagers being stupid and supporting each others stupidity until all reason is suppressed.

I don't know what I am trying to say (as usual) but joining gangs can probably be quite appealing if you are in a certain situation.
