I just today found out that in my state the age of consent is 16 years old. I grew up my whole life thinking the nationwide age was 18. Am I missing something?

I always thought that the age of consent for men was 16 and for women was 18

In my country the Age of Consent is in fact 16. That basically means you're allowed to have consensual sex and get a job and such.

18 is the age limit on things like porn magazines, alcohol, strip clubs etc. All the less-savoury things.

In my state, at least, 15 and under may have no sexual relations with anybody, 16-17 may have sexual relations with other 16-17 year olds, and 18+ may have sexual relations with anybody over 18.

Not sure. I believe the idea is that when you're 16 you're eligible for a job and as such have the possibility of caring for a child should you screw up and get some girl pregnant.

I suppose the whole 18+ limit on alcohol and such is decided by the government who think that 16 & 17 year olds will be irresponsible with such things and end up causing more problems.
Also, something about the frontal lobe in your brain not being fully developed when you're in your teen years, meaning it's more difficult to make responsible decisions. Made worse when under the influence.

In USA afaik it's 21 to get alcohol.

Fun fact? In Poland you can do sex at 16, but porn actually you can watch only over 18.

You can buy achahol at any age.

Alcohol, however, that's 21. And it's your entire country.

How would they even know if you are watching porn?
