I use Linux Mint 9. Its based on ubuntu but, in my opinion, its even better because of the layout, the menu, the software center and some other details which have better functionality... Plus it comes ready out of the box with all the essentials.

AND it (mostly) doesnt have the debian "only fsf ware" clause, so it has most fsf restricted media formats built in
also they have a stable build tree, they dont usually do rolling updates or bleeding edge updates, so your system is a lot more hardened than ubuntu
