South Africa - Mexico : 1 - 1
Alright, so, that's not a bad opening match. One low-tier nation versus one mid-tier nation ends with a draw, high tempo, and while not that many shots on goal, a great deal of offensive play. The first goal of the FIFA WC 2010 were scored by a guy named Tshabalala; try pronouncing that while you're drunk.
Fair result? Maybe. While Gio Dos Santos were still on the pitch for Mexico, SA got pushed back heavily and were put under a great deal of duress - something they handled admirably, and even took advantage of when Mexico sent their offensive fullbacks in the attack, and got countered to death when Mr. Tshabalala clinched a beautiful goal.
And then there's the penalty situation. One unidentified South Africa player is through, and Calcido (or whoever) pushes him over. The ref didn't see it as a penalty, I did though - but I highly doubt it'll be the most controversial refereeing decision in this competition.
In the end, Marquez made the equalizer through a horrid defensive mistake by his opponents, and with the level of domination Mexico put in through large portions of the match, none can really argue that any one of these teams were hard done by the end result ;)
