Shukos do offer excellent protecting against any type of sword, as you can simply block it with your palm, then twist to lock it in place. You are then free to kick/punch/scratch at your opponent. They're also handy as a tool, climbing trees without branches is much easier with them.

In any situation where your opponent is unarmed, you've basically got free brass knuckles and razor blades at your disposal.

But they aren't bullet proof.
