So home brewing is pretty cool. Anyone here do it?


Right now I'm in a ghetto hooch home brew phase. All you have to do to make some decent alcohol is get a bottle of juice or w/e drink you want. Add a bit of extra sugar if you want more alcohol. Add like half a teaspoon of turbo yeast. Then throw a balloon on top so the gases don't make the bottle explode.

There's a lot of markup on those though. You can get a pound of turbo yeast for $13 and have enough yeast to make ~250 gallons of 22% abv alcohol.


It's also legal even if you're under 21. It might vary by state, but generally you're allowed to homebrew 100 gallons of alcohol per year, per adult in the house to a maximum of 200 gallons per household.



I just started my ghetto hooch career, so I haven't tried many things yet. What I did try so far is, some cranberry apple juice, some berry mix juice, and 3 types of Arizona Tea.

By far, the most tastiest is the Arizona Tea Green Tea with Ginseng and Honey. The other arizona teas weren't very good. The Sweet Tea one was really bitter, and the Iced Tea with Lemon Flavor was sour. The Green Tea though is just right. I don't like juices, so I somewhat unsurprisingly, didn't like the berry or cranberry apple one either.

I started with just dollar store sized bottles. And now that I know I want to do the green tea one, I got two 1 gallon bottles from walmart and 4lbs of sugar. I added about 2lbs of sugar per bottle after pouring some out and drinking it. Using an online calculator, I should have a 17%abv potential. I think it'll be done in about a week.



Anyway, I just think it's neat. It's so easy to make alcohol, it's amazing.

I actually bought a set where you make your own wine.
Wasn't what I thought it would be, but it's always worth trying!

I'll definatily try it again though, it was my first time and about 3 months ago, always funny to see the results.

Make sure to prick some tiny holes in the balloon, that's how the gas gets out without letting air in. Crucial step.

My Dad's done stuff like this before, all through kits though. He has a proper barrel thing to let it ferment in and he's done, uuuh, beer and ginger beer I think. I prefer store bought.
