[Art]Photoshop Tutorial: Easy Head
Hi, and welcome to my tutorial.

I will describe how you can make an easy but still good looking head.

First of all, if you dont have photoshop, download the 30 day trial here:

http://www.soft32.com/Download/free-...p/4-346-1.html

Then, install it etc.

Then we are ready to begin. One protip first: Make all of your textures directly on the template. (Or a new 128x128 file, NEVER higher, since there will be uber quality loss).

Grab the template here:
http://forum.toribash.com/torishop/i...lates/head.jpg

Save the template to you desktop or wherever you can find it easy.

The template can seem pretty messed up for many of you, so i will explain it too.

The green highlighted area is in the middle. put your face there.

The red highlighted area are the sides. put ears, headphones, etc. there.

Example

Alright! Now we are good to go!

Open the template with photoshop.

It should look something like this.

if you dont have layers open, go to Window -> Layer, OR press F7.

Start with right clicking on the layer, choose "Duplicate Layer"

If there comes a pop up window after that, just press OK.

Choose the Rectangular Marquee Tool (click or press M to choose it), and mark the whole picture, and press delete to make it transparent.

Layers are everything in photoshop. They are very important, and its easier to edit the picture with layers.
Now, choose a colour you want to have as a "skin" for your head.

Then press OK.

Now select the brush tool, the one that looks like a brush (or press B).
OR, choose the Paint Bucket.

Fill your layer.
Good! Now you have a basic skin.

In the layer window, click the "eye" ikon, next to your layer, to make it invisible.

Right click on the Lasso Tool, and choose Polygonal lasso tool.

Then draw your hair with the tool.

TIP: You can easly zoom in and out with ALT+mouse scroll

You will have to explore the tool a little before you get how it works.

when you are done, klick on the layer called "Background".
Press Ctrl + C
Press Ctrl + V

You just got a new layer.
Its called Layer 1.
Drag the layer to the top of all layers in the layer window.
(If your marque dissapears when you are doing this, CTRL+click on the layer, and it will re-appear.)

Use the paint brush to fill you layer with a color you want.

Right klick on the layer in the layer window, choose Blending options, and you will get this window.

Choose drop shadow, 90 degrees.
And gradient overlay, set the opacity at 50%

Choose the layer called "Background copy" in layers window, click the empty box to make it visible again to check that it looks good. when you have done that, uncheck the eye again to make it invisible.

Now its time to make the face. I will just make simple eyes, nose and mouth.

You can do it as you like it, but i prefer to choose the brush tool, black, and then just draw.

Right clicking on the layer Background, choose "Duplicate Layer", choose the Rectangular Marquee Tool, and mark the whole picture, and press delete to make it transparent.

Drag the layer so its between background copy and layer 1.
choose black colour.
draw the eyes, nose, mouth etc.

press the eye on the background copy layer, to make the skin visible.

add some special effects, with tex. paint brush.

Save your masterpiece as JPG or TGA.

Upload

PROFIT!

Hope this was a little helpful. Remember it takes alot of time and practice to learn photoshop, and dont be dissapointed if it didnt turn out the way you imagined, just try over and over again

really? nobody does things at 256x128?

you get better mapping that way, and i'd sacrifice a little horizontal stretch for a well proportioned head anyday
