Another major thing in GIMP is the Brush tool. It is located across from the pen tool, as you can see in the picture.

GIMP comes pre loaded with some very basic brushes. To use it, just drag your mouse where you want the brush to appear.

However, you can download more brushes from various websites. I prefer deviantart.com, where all you do is search for a brush type you want, click it, and then save under your Gimp folder>share>Gimp>2.0>Brushes. If it is an .abr document, then just save it under the above folders. If it is an .rar file, extract it first, and then save it. There is no limits to the brushes you can have, as you can see in the below picture. To the left, you can change the color of any brush as well as choose the brush. To the right, you can choose the brush more freely, and you can also see some of the brushes I have, as well as in the picture I made sampling some of my brushes.

I think there isn’t much else to know that’s too important, just ask me if you want to know anything.

Next up is the smudge tool. It’s a great tool, and it help add flow to a piece. It doesn’t leave it pixilated, and if used properly it makes a smooth flowing piece. Down below I have a before and after picture of an example of proper use of the smudge tool (well, not exactly…\o/), as well as its location on the toolbar.

Crop tool is another widely used tool in GIMP. It doesn’t do much other than what you think it would – crop. I have highlighted it with my mouse in the next picture, and I will also show you how to use it as well.

Do you notice how the resolution changes from 512x512 to 256x256? That’s because I cropped it. Pretty simple, I don’t think it deserves much more of an introduction.

Another important trick you need to know to make a good head texture in GIMP is how to make a symmetric head texture. This should work for most head, but head that are meant to be asymmetrical this does not apply to. I will have a step by step explanation on how to do this. Please look below if you wish to see this.

"Use the flip tool (highlighted on the toolbar), flip horizonmtally, and then drag over to the right side."

Hmph. These tutorials are actually full of nothing. Just some very, very basic tips on using GIMP. But nothing really related to texturing.
Texturing tutorial
No requests please
Not yet, I have to introduce some basics before I get there.
Next week starts head textures and previews.
