beginner sanctuary is basically for all "beginner" questions, but you can ask the same question in rapid threads too. but i would say you get a much better explained answer in beginner sanctuary.

yes you can use gimp, photoshop and even pait, be sure to use the templates from the shop to map your textures correclty, remember you can buy art with toticredits at the message board.
