For your avatar thing, it's because before people could do that, it wasn't until 2010 until they made it so you had to have vip.
As for the password thing, someone got hold of many older player's passwords and used them to spam (I think) so they made it that if your password is #'s of days old, they want you to change your pass so it would be harder for you to get hacked with a new password, and it would help older people from getting hacked aswell.
