Infraction changes
Hello everyone. This is probably not terribly exciting to anyone in particular, but some changes have recently been made to the infraction system. In the interest of clarity, the general outline is described below:

The problem:
Too often, an infraction didn't tell you what you were really being infracted for until you opened it and read the message, hoping the moderator didn't forget to include the details, and if they did, PMing them and hoping that they got back to you about it in a timely fashion. It usually worked out, but this could be made clearer.

The other issue is a bit of a lack of consistency: Hypothetically, someone gets on your account and duel scams someone. How long will your account get banned for? Answer: Depends strongly on which infraction the person banning your account decides to give you, since there were a variety of infractions for the sole purpose banning people.

Furthermore, if you got banned with one of those infractions, and then unbanned, even getting a 1 point infraction (which weren't handed out very often at all) would result in a ban twice as long as your previous one.

The solution:
There are now more infraction types with specific messages and associated point values. Keep in mind, if you receive an infraction, only administrators can change the point value associated with it. Thus, most violations of any specific type are going to receive the same amount of points, unless the circumstances are so exceptional as to warrant an alternative response (forewarning, that'll usually be a permaban).

Additionally, the automatic ban scale has been expanded from a 20 point scale to a 30 point scale. The new scale is as follows:

5, 9, 12 infraction points: 1 day ban
15: 7 day ban
20, 24: 1 month ban
27, 30: 3 month ban
31+: permanent
Repeated values mean that an account will be banned each time it reaches at least that number of points.

Generally, the intermediate ban lengths between 3 months and permanent are relatively superfluous, and almost any 1 year ban can either be appealed to less or will at some point be made permanent.

Note also that this is generally more forgiving. Most of the infractions are worth the same number of points as they were previously, so technically you can get a few more of them without getting a ban longer than a week.

To somewhat counter this, however, note that most infractions now take longer to expire, so it's possible to build up more infractions if you don't read them and take them to heart.

A few notes:
Most minor infractions are easily forgiven: if you get a useless post infraction, please just make your posts more useful in the future. These infractions are usually completely disregarded by staff after a couple of months.

Most major infractions are not easily forgiven: Just as an example, the infraction for "Scamming or thievery" (referring to duel scams, stealing items from other people's accounts, and similar), lasts 3 months and is worth 20 points. Thus, it is an instant 1 month ban, and getting two is an automatic permaban. It cannot be given as a warning, so please do not scam people. These will always be taken into account if you apply for staff, or otherwise.

Afterword:
Hopefully, this will never actually be relevant to you. Please note that existing bans and infractions are unaffected, but that the new ban thresholds will be applied to all future infractions. Thus, if you already had 16 points, you're now 4 points away from a 1 month ban instead of 1 point away from a 3 month ban.

If you have any comments or concerns regarding this change, feel free to post them here or send me a PM. No changes will be made to old infractions that didn't result in a ban, and any questions about current bans must be posted in Ban Appeals.

----

TL;DR: It's harder to get banned with infractions now, but serious infractions last longer so don't scam people.

----
Edit: Additional note, certain infractions have extending lengths for repeated same offenses within their expiry period. This is very intentional, but will mostly be contained to the Market to begin with, so please read the Market rules carefully if you receive an infraction.

Squad Squad Squad lead?
The standardization of Toribash Squad roles may have gone too far!
So what if you get from 13-14, 15 to 19 and 25-26 points? Does it round down to the lower ban length or the higher?
bitchass
If you have 13 points and go to 14 points, there's no ban. If you start at 0 and get 14 points, you get a 1 day ban because you ended up reaching the 12-point ban. If you start at 0 and get 15 points, you get a 1 week ban because you ended up reaching the 15-point ban.

(This behavior is unchanged from the old system, it just has new numbers attached.)

Is there any way to do an account status lookup for 1) other accounts and 2) your own account?

There should be an infraction tab on your profile

And you can't see the infraction for other accounts as a normal user

Really, where? Been skimming through all the buttons I can find in there

If done properly, a permaban isn't issued via infraction, so there wouldn't be anything to show in the tab anyway.
