well my stratogy (how ever thats spelled) is to start a horse stance for balence it helps counter any attack and if the start a shovel just raise your shoulder and contract elbows then if your being raised just let your legs relax or extend them with ankles then you can suplex them easily

Yeah, you have to remember your hips, glutes, and mainly all parts of your legs really help in aikido. They can give you power for lifts, save you if you use them right, and more. However, you don't want to forget your arms and torso as well.
Basically,You grab with one hand and the other will act like your third foot,This helps if you wanna suplex or counter a shovel,However i like to go for the head and try to rip it off as soon as possible.

Also, don't be afraid to release your grabs incase you need too, its better to give up the adv to save yourself then be dq'ed.
