I have never tried Grados but I've read good things about them.

Alessandro are basically the same as grado (theyre far more similar to grado than different). A bit more balanced (i.e. better IMO).

Still dont like them though
Hey m0o, hook me up with some good headphones.
I will use them mostly for music, maybe a little bit for games. I have an sb audigy 2 sound card in my computer.
I listen to various alternative/indie bullshit. Acoustic guitars, synths, etc.
Some degree of isolation would be a good idea as I'll be moving into a dorm in the next few months.
Looking for something in the $50-$100 range and I live in northwest USA.
oh also, I'm a bit of a bassfag.
i have a totally post modern tattoo of a scalene triangle.

Check out Guitar Centre and try some of the shit there and see what you like.

You might want to consider the ES7 too (don't buy from ebay). They're supraaural though so they rest on the ears.

Not too much of a specialist on bassy headphones to be honest, certainly not in this pricerange.

Outside of your price (used options) are DT770pro, M-AudioQ40.

The sony XB series seems fairly popular in america at the moment if forums are anything to go by, but I've never heard them and the bass looks skullcandy level so I personally wouldnt be able to tenjoy them at all

edit: Actually, you might want to consider a Creative Aurvana Live. It's a rebranded Denon AHD-1001 and can be had for ~$100. Try them out first if you can (shouldnt be too hard)

Heya m0o, do you also suggest headsets? I am looking for something between the range of $50-$100, EST of North America, the specific purpose is 75% listening to techno and rock music and 25% listening to people on skype for video games. Comfort is important because they will be on my head nearly 15 hours a day. Also, in case it wasn't obvious it will be plugged into my computer.
Need help?

Thanks m0o, reading reviews now.

How do you feel about 5.1 surround sound headphones? Supposedly good for spotting where the noise came from for gaming?

What sprooj said. Theyre generally only four channels of useless transducers so all you ever really get is "front left" or "front right" or "back right" or whatever.

The only "surround headphone" I've ever heard that actually works is the Sennheiser Surrounder (which is about $100 and looks like a fucking space ship).

IMO 2 decent transducers (eg from an AD700) >>>>> 4 shitty ones or even 6 shitty ones

Hey just had a friend get the AD900's for me from Yodobashi!

Those retain the same great soundstage of the AD700's right?

He got back a few days ago and I'll be getting it this weekend so I'm pretty excited.

At first he accidentally bought the DT880's but those were overpriced at yodo, while the ad900's were 10 bucks cheaper than online prices at US sites (there were some at kokaku.com for less, but I couldn't read japanese and probably shipping woulda negated the savings)

But surround sound headphones don't work well and if they happen to be good for gaming, generally aren't good for much else.

EDIT: don't some soundcard have software that can turn 5.1 channel audio into 2.0 and give the binaural audio effect?

Yodobashi is awesome. And yes, the AD900 is basically an AD700 but better.

Yes, most games and soundcards have EAX or a dolby headphone-esque effect that you can turn on to emulate 5.1.

To be honest though, I generally prefer to leave them off for competative play.
