How do we define a lift and should it be considered a forbidden/lame technique?

Lifts by themselves are lame. They are actually pretty useful to get a reaction from the opponent and set up a next move. Same thing with shovels: You could feint a shovel one turn and hit a snapdownon the next turn.

Yup lifts are lame but honestly forbidding anything that isnt a completely broken glitch would be wrong and as roux said, you can always transition from lift into something more stylish.
Also good luck in that tournament roux, i havent been able to do any sports for quiet a few months now bc of school, medicines, my new sleeping rythm and stuff but i plan to start again as soon as possible!

what if we work it from the underlying principles of what makes a play style/move lame?

as in few options to continue, bad aesthetics, repetitive, few counter options etc or what do you mean ?
