in all the head kick replays i find they are using a mod which places them just a little further away from uke than the standard starting position could someone please inform me on what this mod is it would be appreciated cheers.

It is not a mod.
You just set yourself a bit farther away from the opponent by changing the settings from Options -> Game Settings
There should be this thing called engage distance... Change that, and the distance between you and Uke will change.

The engage distance between Uke and Tori should be 180 - 300 for head kicks.
