No, you can simply press the [Edit] button next to the head texture item to upload a new image to it.

You don't need to purchase a new head item every time you want to upload a new image.

You can also buy head texture items from the Market or the Items board.
They're generally cheaper there.

Better you should add a white or simple black font by tipying on edit, also as a tip never send items with your own texture.
