I duo queue with someone about 5 days a week, trying to learn and improve as much as I can. There is a player who is really solid, he was in Diamond last season and offered to play with me.

Well a few months ago, I started playing a bunch of Malphite. And I took Malphite into the jungle. Usually, I do "pretty well" to "average" compared to the higher ELO players we match against having a joint MMR when we duo. Sometimes I get completely outmatched and he needs to carry if we want to win the game. So it was incredibly unusual, that he was in fact feeding top lane. Time and time again, he was dying top lane. He wasn't making excuses for himself, he wasn't playing on tilt, he was just trying his best.

When the game ended in around 24 minutes, my final score was 5 kills, 4 deaths. His final score was 4 kills, 13 deaths. I was astonished. I think it was one of the only times that I felt "he lost us the game". I said out loud "I did okay but I couldn't carry that". And that's when we took a look at the statistics together. He did nearly twice as much damage as I did. He had more gold than anyone else on the team. So yeah he had 13 deaths, but he was making himself as useful as possible with what he did have. And while I had a positive KD ratio, and was trying to gank lanes often, I wasn't doing everything I could to turn my size into a win.

We noticed a pattern. I could go 15-1 on Graves, and he could go 6-3 on Karma, and he would do 25% more damage than I did. I use to think this was just a "Oh well she's AoE, and I'm single target" problem, but then when the time came for role reversal, his Graves did substantially more damage than mine, with a lot less gold. It was about usefulness. I wasn't using my farm effectively enough to be as useful as I could've been.

Now, when I play, I focus on how can I be of most use to the team. Sometimes I'll go 4-2 as Graves and out damage a 9-1 Talon because of how I played the team fights. Because your kills nor your gold really matter if you can't make full use of it.

When I said 'You could use your hugeness much better', I meant you could've dominated that game and made it a much more decisive clean victory. It was clear you only "did your part", in a game where you could've been a monster.

When people ask "Should I level up this spell next or this spell", or "Should I buy this item next, or this item?", I'm thinking 'Well... what's going to make you the most useful? Will you do more by choosing option A or B?"
