I think these are the key to try to keep my balance and keep me inside the dojo when necessary.
I'm confused.

Are we pretending we CAN'T use them, that they're fractured, or you're like... missing them entirely?

Because some joints make the game near unplayable when fractured, like the ABS or lumbar when you become a pretzel. However, if I didn't use them, that'd be okay and I could live on without them more than say my shoulders.
