So, I just started minecraft(freeplay only) What exactly can I do?

what i'v done so far:

• Cut 30 trees
  Went underground first day to escape being killed.
  Built a furnace
  Built a workbox
  Pickaxed my way to 100 coal
  Pickaxed my way to 50 iron
  Found some gold on day 3. though i got nothing from it
  Kept moving, found a water fall.
  day 8 accidently broke the water fall, water flooded into camp ground
  plugged up hole
  kept moving
  struck lava, ran away
  built a wall to stop the lava
  went back up to surface with all my new items
  built a house
  made a sign for my house
  skeletons broke my windows
  killed them with my pickaxe

how do i make swords and what not? I don't know how to defend my house .-.
