Really, there is no conceivable way to eliminate poverty without making some people less rich. In order for socialism to work, it has to encourage further economic growth, something which the current Social Security program fails miserably to do.

Fabian Socialism (named for the Roman senator, Fabian(look him up somewhere)) at its finest is not about extending the miserable lives of those in the lowest classes, it is about helping people help themselves. If done right, the government can produce more GDP with the funds it invests than it started out with.

For example, a man is looking for a job. He is a skilled worker, but he can't get transportation to any offices to work at. Without any help, he's pretty much screwed. Socialism hopes to solve the problems that would be tough for individuals to solve on their own, but that a whole country could solve easily together. And so there's free public transportation.

Really, the main downside of socialism as it now exists is that
1. Medical services are so-so, although they are ubiquitous and free
2. Taxes are real high on most middle class and upper class
3. The government spends more money than it needs to sometimes

But yea I respect your point of view aswell.

Speaking of futurama:
I decided to whisper the king lizard but he told me truth was just a unnecessary conjunction with religion.
