I'm gonna try and get his thoughts on the situation, I'd be interested to hear from someone who spent their whole life planning for epidemics.

Pls update with discussions.

Also didnt read thread cause short work break so someone may have mentioned already.

NZ news reported that there were accusations that China was secretly burning some dead bodies before identifying or confirming how/why they died specifically. Which sounds nuts.

I have heard this too, however I think thats more a problem of chinese politics than actual severity. The reason this coronavirus has already surpassed SARS in numbers of infected in only one month is mostly down to the fact that unlike SARS it's contagious during incubation period (where you dont show symptoms yet), so many people spread it without knowing they have it.
China has been killing its citizens for organs for a long time, let alone all that 20th century stuff. I've heard some very startling stories from my Chinese step mum, which aren't really relevant here, but...
Generally when the PRC is organ harvesting, they cremate the bodies afterwards.

But even if it's just to under-report the Wuhan virus, and not related to their normal operations, it's hardly surprising. All about the face, ukno, the image.

That said I think China is a cool country, there's despotic regimes everywhere, I'd still visit. As long as there's no pandemic at the time ofc. I bet flights will be cheaper after this! lol

Pretty strange we're all worked up about this virus considering the flu is much more deadly.

We just like shit new and shiny? Thoughts?
Around 1300 recovered and 560 deaths.28K infected. people started to recover at a faster rate idk how

I see people using the comparison to the flu to make fun of those who have real concern about the coronavirus, but it's not any reason not to take the coronavirus very seriously.

Yes, this. This is the conversation I keep having with the kids I teach.

I don't think a lot of people really appreciate how quickly a virus like this can mutate, especially if it's crossing borders and interacting with a bunch of different immune systems.

(Also a lot of people don't understand how deadly influenza can be for vulnerable people)

I don't think the flu comparisons are about 'making fun' of people who take the coronovirus seriously. I think it's more just putting things into perspective. There's a (hell of) a lot of scaremongering going on with this outbreak, and people do stupid shit with fear. Several of my Chinese friends on Facebook have shared around this article, agreeing with it and citing their own examples.

I think we can still put this outbreak into perspective without trivialising it. As Maya said, the flu is more widespread. CDC reckons 19 million Americans experienced flu symptons this season and more than 10,000 died - As the CDC says, this coronovirus outbreak is definitely a public health threat, but the immediate risk to the US public is low. Same goes for elsewhere around the globe.

The relevant authorities will worry about this (you can be sure of that), there's really no need for the general public to worry. Your odds of catching this coronovirus outside of China are still far less likely than you being struck by lightning - This ain't making fun of people who've gone out and bought face masks, this is just putting things into perspective.

Also I spend most of my waking life with children who really are making fun of it, so I guess my view of general opinions on the virus are skewed.
