IRC etiquette and a statement on hate speech.
IRC standards have been updated. The guidelines are as follows:

  • No flaming or harassment.
  • No NSFW links.
  • No warez.
  • No spam.
  • No racial slurs.
  • No DDoS'ing, phishing or anything of that nature.

Notes:

  • Staff may not be able to handle your requests immediately, please submit any troubles you may have through the forum as it is more likely to be seen & dealt with there.
  • Complaints about staff and/or ban appeals are to be held in query or their respective boards only.
  • Any questions about the rules can be discussed with any staff in the channel, if you wish to discuss the rules publicly feel free to make a discussion thread or bring it to attention of the staff via. PM.
  • Admins, SMods and GMs currently have &, @ and % respectively for ease of identification. Any non-staff that may help you are likely to sport a +, so contact who is most likely able to help you. Due to MSquad affairs being handleable only through the scam reports board you are asked to go there directly with your issues or query the member you need to contact.

Regarding homophobic/racial slurs and their usage in public space, here is the current ruleset:

  • The entirety of the forums, excluding clan boards
  • IRC channels #toribash and #support
  • Ingame, official servers and any globally broadcast server (for as long as people are able to join that server based on the broadcast info - these servers will be considered private if you change the room name and notify the room)

Using slurs in any of those places allows a moderator to infract or ban you at his or her discretion. Staff justify this kind of policing of servers as they believe removing slurs from the vocabulary of officially endorsed Toribash Community mediums is a small price to pay for a more cohesive community experience. It is worth noting that any private channels (i.e: private IRC channels, clan boards, private servers in-game) are not actively policed and so you are generally free to do as you want there regarding the language you use, though be aware reports will be looked at on a case by case basis. For example, repeatedly insulting someone in your clan board will most likely result in staff intervention.

Users should try to handle these sorts of issues amongst themselves before escalating to staff intervention. We don't want to have to step in for every single case, so please ask people to stop (And document it!) before reporting to us.

This has been edited into our FAQs and Beginner's Sanctuary's introduction thread to the rules. Thanks for reading.

No my friend, of course you have been crystal clear. If I were to stare deeply into you there would be not a shred of abberation of any kind.

As above, my disagreement was with consistency. If admins feel the need to interpret the rules as they go instead of having a set way to deal with them, then "There are no real rules, but you can be banned."
<Faint> the rules have been stated quite clearly 3 times now from high staff
Pretty much you can do whatever the hell your little heart desires in YOUR OWN server. However if you come into someone else's server or a public Mod hosted/made server all bets are off. You should watch your language because, more often than not you will be scolded and a punishment will follow depending on the Mod running the server or handling the cases discretion. We do private server rulings on a case by case basis. You come to us yelling about a racist slur or hate speech we will hear your case and act according to the evidence provided. This also brings in the fact that you can NOT just cry wolf without any proof and expect something to happen, because it won't.

In conclusion, 'nigger' or any variation of the word (friendly intentions or not), as well as any other hateful slur that is said in a public server, or something that is declared public space will be felt with based on a Mods discretion. In a private server, the evidence and report you bring to us ( unless we were directly a witness) will decide what we do for that case.

Really I didn't know this was a discussion board. Could of sworn we had a board for arguements like this. I must be crazy. :/

ok gorman, let me make it clear enough that a 10 year old might understand.

do not use racial slurs in a public setting anywhere on the forums, irc, or in-game. if your racist self feels the need to add a racial slur to your vocabulary while talking to someone else, do it in your own privacy or with others who feel the need to use racial slurs.

there is no "interpretation" of the rules, we're telling you to simply not use racial slurs. with this, we are trying to give people the freedom to do what they like on their own terms in their own privacy. continue to drag this on without any further reason and i will delete your posts, thanks.

Use the good old this is not the place for that so people have to make their own thread which they won't because it'll just get closed maybe even delete a few posts its fine ;)
can't wait to follow these rules

made some sort of announcement in the gm irc channel as well so hopefully we don't see any more of this stuff being allowed.

i am going to continue digging this stance because i am not wrong about what i am saying. if there was room for me to be wrong about what i've said, i wouldn't continue to reiterate the same thing over and over. it's extremely simple and at this point you guys are arguing just to argue. we had a 4 page long (40 per) discussion regarding racial slurs and came to what it is now, if you guys wanted to have better input on the rule, you had all the time in the world before and still have all the time in the world now, but instead of coming up with solutions or trying to work with the staff, you guys are practically arguing that the staff are corrupted or whatever it is - most of the threads that don't last longer than a few posts (like ele's recent staff complaint) don't last because they have no reason to last longer than a few posts. if you guys actually made a reasonable complaint or discussion thread, it would last for pages and be discussed (kind of like pidgenere's complaint thread that went to shit after a while or the context thread in discussion).

but seriously, this isn't the place to discuss case by case related incidents, feel free to continue discussing the rules or how we can better the current state that they are in. making passive aggressive arguments and complaining isn't going to change the rules so if that is all you guys are here for, i'd suggest not continuing.

Following further discussion, we've updated the rule to include homophobic slurs.

does that include "gay"?
The past makes you wanna die out of regret, and future makes you depressed out of anxiety. So by elimination, the present is likely the happiest time.

gay is like jew. it isn't inherently a bad word by itself. it depends on how you use it. so if someone says 'gay' in an inflammatory manner - yes. the rule is more for common-sense words like 'faggot'
Happy to see that this was included. I wish people would stop using it to purposefully antagonize the staff and others though.
thank god. this is mildly off-topic but I've noticed that a huge amount of people trying to justify their use of slurs are citing this routine by Louis CK. for those of you, I would consider watching this scene addressing that word from the show he writes and stars in, "Louie". Also, see another standup bit from him that I like to show to people who use him as an argument... only posting this because of the number of people using him as a surrogate for their hate speech

Can't we just have a censor for really bad words? Or racist remarks.

If your asking for a shortcut to using these words, your practically asking me to watch you more closely. What you just asked for is like me asking: "can everyone who decides to shoot up my school put a silencer on their guns so I don't have to hear the shots?". Using the gun in this manner is still illegal, putting a silencer on it does nothing to the fact that you have a gun and you are shooting people with it even if my ears are censored to the violence. You may NOT use ANY hateful words regardless of intent- actually I'm just repeating myself here. I don't know how I can make this any clearer than it already is. Here is the most simplest way I can explain this:

Public server/event + slur = warning/ban
Private server/event + slur = we don't care unless you are reported or we witness it and step in.
Private server + report = possible warning/ban
