this point always gets mentioned but the game is old and doesnt get updated; we havent had a substantial gameplay update since god knows when. i don't think any indie game could survive for so long under these conditions. there's a very small group of people that essentially keep the game alive due to their dedication to competitive or creative play -- that's usually the case even for old AAA games, but those aren't as niche and obviously get way more players. i believe that most ppl who come across toribash will just see it as a cool novelty/gimmick and it'll get old after a week or two.

the key reason why i kept playing or interacting with the community for years was bc i had bad internet for half of the past decade. once i got better internet and could play other games i never looked back
