You're pretty much lacking in the basics. Lighting, depth, and flow..
The focal placemet is off, I suggest looking at the rule of thirds.

Basically, read up on the basics. (For Vog, the text is terrible)

@vog, As Wafflez said, it lacks flow. Duplicating the render and doing 'pick' on it won't always look good. Try messing with the layer modes as well.

I like the head idea, you can try to make more details, looks a bit empty now.
And the hole of the eyes usually sit on top of this "mask".
And the shadding is not making much sense for me.
