If Toribash ever actually shuts down… then what?
So, we all know Toribash has been running on fumes for a while now. Sir stepped back from developing, staff are still here doing what they can, but they’re volunteers, not devs, not paid, just keeping things from collapsing. And without an actual developer willing to put time into a tiny game like this, that “what if Toribash dies” conversation isn’t just doomposting anymore, it’s kind of realistic.

Hampa’s still around, but Toribash Next… yeah, let’s be honest, that thing launched rough and never really went anywhere. Doesn’t look like it’s being worked on anymore, so classic Toribash is basically the last pillar standing, and it’s wobbling.

If the servers ever do shut down for good, what happens to everyone? Do clans move together to some other forum based game and keep that whole legacy going? Does everyone split and just play their own stuff? Is there even a “next step” from Hampa or Nabi at this point?

Not trying to be dramatic, just being real. The game’s getting closer to the edge, and no one ever actually talks about what comes after.

What would you do if Toribash finally went dark? Where would you go, who would you stick with, what’s the plan?

Assuming the forums also go completely down and the discord becomes inactive, then idfk.
What other forum based games even are there? Dwarf fortress is the only one i could think of.
Im sure some people would move to yomi hustle or something but personally id probably just stop interacting with the community other than a few people :L
But yeah tb dying would suck, dont think there would really be a long term replacement for toribash, atleast for me

Archive the forum and give Toribash the Toribash Next treatment. Use Steam for multiplayer and item management. It would completely break every aspect of the current multiplayer and economy but at least we could still play with each other.
Doesn't affect me nor the people I mainly vc with. We don't give a fuuuuuuuck

Infracted for having the best goddamn replays in Toribash history.

It's not an if, it's a when.

Nearly all closed-source games had an end date due to the reliance on external servers. There's a reason Stop Killing Games and the initiative to preserve archives of games started picking up steam, all with companies shutting down games left and right to their liking once revenue is no longer flowing as expected. I doubt Toribash's community would be willing to go as far as The Crew's community where they went to make their own servers for the game, but I digress.

All of Toribash's interaction are through multiplayer lobbies, forums and Discord. Nobody has access to the source code, so the day the servers shut down alongside the forums is the day playing Toribash as we know it will die if nobody does anything.

However, as long as the official Toribash Discord server stays afloat and is maintained by volunteers, anyone can join and play this game anytime with the caveat of it being singleplayer only. We'll lose so much resources and history that made the game what it is today, but Toribash as a game will still be playable and experienced through Discord and community run efforts as long as the operating systems don't fully move on from X86 (judging by the ARM/RISC V race, it might within decades) marking the executable incompatible.

So instead of focusing on "omg Toribash will die soon", let's talk about what archival efforts might be necessary to keep Toribash, the game and its community, alive through Discord. You can keep reading if you felt like spending more time on this than doomscrolling on TikTok (I've seen the shit you were into on Wibbles.)

What if Toribash is removed from Steam?

What about the forums?

What about textures?

What about colors?

What about 3D items?

What about particles?

What about replays?

What about mods?

What about scripts?

What about multiplayer lobbies?

With all of that said, I'll go through every 3D item to download it all for archival purposes later this week. Might do the same with mods and, maybe if I feel like saturating my backup server, some notable replays and attachments. Of course I'm not going to be instantly downloading everything, that would crash whatever toaster Toribash servers run on.

Great writeup Nokia I hope you do preserve it because it will otherwise be gone forever when it's gone and I'd love to have some memories even then

can we just preserve sirkill1 with the history of TB? and maybe delete capitalism from the history and forget he ever existed for the sake of our mental health, feel the need to punch my screen when i see him post, just me?

One thing I’ve been thinking about after reading that post: what actually happens to the official discord if toribash shuts down?

Would hampa hand the server over to someone in the community to keep things going?
Would he lock it, archive it, or even repurpose it for whatever he works on next? (if he's even working on anything else or if he's still wanting to work on TBNext?)
Or does it just quietly die with everything else?

The Discord is basically the last stable link the community has, so whatever happens to it pretty much decides whether Toribash’s community survives or scatters. Curious what people think would actually happen with that, and obviously the rest of the communities clan discord channels etc

Throughout all the time, so toribash, has any company ever tried to buy toribash? Would someone not buy it to continue it?

the numbers probably aren’t realistic for buyers in bigger companies and see no profit in the game itself, the game also has a huge learning curve for most people, it’s not something simple that a company can look at and be like okay people can easily get the hang of this
