Corona virus discussion thread
Hi, I really want to know the truth behind all this. I hear everywhere that there are around 80 deaths, but I heard somewhere that its all fake and a lot of people died in Wuhan. I also heard an interesting theory but that was too unbelievable and I also don't believe it. So I won't tell that. There are any real Chinese who can tell me the real situation? I believe in the 80 deaths but it keeps irritating me when I think that it may be fake.

Even the mainland Chinese are being lied to by their government about the statistics. I don't think you'll get more information than "it's likely a lot more than they're reporting."

The scariest part at the moment is that lots of people saw the travel ban in Wuhan and immediately traveled elsewhere so they wouldn't be stuck. This likely means that the virus will be spreading to a lot more places very soon. My friends in HK are especially terrified :(

We have one confirmed case here in Seattle, WA, USA and I'm not sure whether or not we got that person quarantined before it spread any further. We'll only know after another couple weeks really. I'm buying a n95 respirator today regardless and would advise others to do the same.

I can assure you that the virus is indeed real and the numbers are more than likely higher in China than what's actually been reported. Viruses naturally leave the body on their own will, and viruses aren't considered living organisms either. Antibiotics will do nothing and vaccines are still being worked on by the WHO. China is a police state, so keep in mind they control the media and how people react to the virus within their own country.

SARS are types of viruses than mutate rapidly attacking your bronchioles (lung cells) and lymphatic system. Hence the name, "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome."

It's made it's way here to Australia as well - 4 confirmed in NSW, one in Victoria.

Not really too personally concerned though. This is like, what, the 4th major pandemic we've had growing up? Swine flu, bird flu and there was another one or two before that. Definitely wouldn't want to be in Wuhan, but statistically, I don't think there's much chance of me or anyone I know being affected by this. I think there's definitely something to be said here about media scaremongering - This aint no WWZ (which you might think it is, if you tuned into some TV news reports). I reckon I'll continue carrying on worrying about my country burning to the ground, rather than this.

Except that SARS isn't a 'type of virus' but a specific designation given to an outbreak in 2001–2003 which also happened in China. The only thing SARS and the current outbreak have in common is that they are both coronaviruses (which is probably what you meant to say)
THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN
Apparently its genomic sequence is 75-80% identical as well. Which would make sense, as you say, since they're both a part of the same family of viruses.

Also, for everyone that's really scared by this, to put things in perspective, this virus currently has a fatality rate of just less than .03%. That's about on par with swine flu. Seasonal influenza, 'The Flu', has a fatality rate of 0.1% (over 3x higher than this coronavirus).

Everything's gonna be fine.

I just read that it's closer to 3% death rate
I apologise for this post.

Well that's the thing... right? We don't actually know what the mortality rate is! China likely doesn't have enough data for accurate statistics yet and we should be dubious of reports regardless.
