Gorman, I saw a similar results with specific v-ray shader ([actually: for] model, whole scene etc). Sure I don't remember it's settings 
Think google's "cpecific shaders" will helpfull

What you do is this;
1) find pixel art with alpha (transparent) background
2) make a cube
3) apply array modifier to cube so its the same number as the pixel art res (eg, if res of pixel art is 22x64 then do 22 by 64 cubes!)
4) apply modifers
5) put the pixel art on to the cube (now an array of cubes) as a texture
6) set it to make alpha'd out bits transparent
7) render
8) ???
9) profit
